Match Report

Ramsey’s dramatic start to the season continued with a 33-12 win away at Congleton. Fintan Cummins put the Manx side in front as early as the first minute with a penalty. Eight minutes later it was Cummins again, this time with a try wide on the right after some good work by Danny Turner.

The Ramsey set piece was fairly dominant throughout and on twenty minutes the tight five made the next score. A big shunt at the set scrum allowed Tynan Pritchard to pick and go blind. Gareth Hinge made the extra man and Danny Turner made the most of the space with a neat try for a 13-0 lead which Cummins extended to 16-0 with another penalty on the half hour after Congleton were caught offside in front of their own sticks.

As half time approached though, the home side fought back. They snuffed out a promising Ramsey attack and Liam O’Doherty hacked the ball downfield. Fintan Cummins managed to kick the bouncing ball dead but from the close lineout Congleton scrum half Kyle Ridgeway scored a great solo try. In what was later described as an unparalleled act of heroism he barged through some weak tackling and over the line. He was however injured in the process and took no further part in the game. Dave Podmore converted for Congleton and left the match hanging at 16-7 at half time.

Congleton’s halt time team talk must have been a good one as they started the second half strongly. There was a bit more bite at the breakdown and they soon had Ramsey in trouble. They drove deep into the Ramsey twenty two and freed up left wing Chris Davies for a try which brought them to within four points at 16-12.

Fintan Cummins steadied the Ramsey ship with a penalty a few minutes later before Ramsey killed the game off with tow great scores engineered by young centre Nick McCudden. His break down the left was supported by Adam Yates who found former skipper Matt Livesey skipping over for a try. Cummins added the extras to make it 26-12. From the restart McCudden went right. He offloaded to Ben Harding who in turn found Lance Wylie on hand to deliver the killer blow. Cummins converted again to round the day off with an eighteen point personal haul.

Ramsey are now joint top of South Lancs/Cheshire 4 and meet joint leaders Parkonians next Saturday.
